Serving Uganda's Vulnerable Children
Okoa Refuge’s Child Rescue Center in Uganda provides life-saving care and hope for vulnerable and orphaned children. Children arrive at the center from the police, hospitals, and social welfare offices, all in urgent need of protection, love, and a safe home. Every child is immediately welcomed and offered holistic support: nutrition, healthcare, nurturing, and education, to help them heal and thrive.
Our Rescue Center
Director Kintu and Manager Thomas lead a team of over 60 Ugandan staff who develop individualized plans for each child, prioritizing health, safety, and emotional well-being. Each child receives everything from safe housing and nutritious meals to education and mentorship designed to restore hope and dignity.
The Okoa child rescue center is sometimes the only option for children in extreme danger or trauma, including abandoned infants, witness protection cases, children affected by trafficking or violence, and those whose parents can no longer care for them safely. While we don’t believe institutional care is best long-term, Okoa’s center provides this critical support when no alternative exists, sometimes for only a season, other times through adulthood, always with a family-focused exit strategy. From housing, meals, healthcare, daily needs, mentoring, and education, these children receive love and everything they need!
The goal is to help all of the children reach their full potential and to ensure they know how loved, valued, and treasured they are along the way!

How and why do kids come to the Okoa Child Rescue Center?
- Babies thrown in latrines
- Babies whose moms died in childbirth
- Children in witness protection who are waiting to testify in court
- Very sick and malnourished children who need specialized care and/or surgery
- Babies of trafficking victims who are too young or are having too much trauma induced mental health issues. These are referrals from our GBV shelters and TOP Campuses.
- Neglected and abandoned babies and children
- Children of convicted criminals who need a safe place to live so that they don’t face retribution from the victim’s relatives
