Christianity Today Features Okoa Refuge’s Role in Uganda’s Justice System for Survivors of Child Abuse

In June, Christianity Today journalist Morgan Lee visited Okoa Refuge, a Christian nonprofit organization in Uganda dedicated to rescuing orphans, supporting victims of human trafficking, and empowering families through Christ-centered ministries.

Her visit came during a pivotal moment in Masaka, Uganda, where the Ugandan High Court was hearing multiple cases of child sexual abuse and exploitation in partnership with Okoa Refuge’s Justice Team.

One heartbreaking case involved an older man who repeatedly abused several children between the ages of five and eight. For over two years, the family endured silence—without resources, legal aid, or hope for justice. It was only through Okoa Refuge’s child rescue ministry and financial support that this case reached the courtroom, where a verdict was finally delivered.

This story sheds light on both the devastating reality of child sexual abuse in Uganda and the critical role of Christian advocacy, anti-trafficking intervention, and family empowerment in pursuing justice.

Okoa Refuge exists to protect the vulnerable, restore families, and bring hope through Christ. From rescuing children and trafficking victims to operating Bible schools, family empowerment programs, and church planting initiatives, every ministry reflects the mission to transform lives and communities in Uganda.
